Country House in Cambridgeshire
19th Century
JA 2012
- After the 3rd Duke’s death the house was mainly used for agents for the family’s fen estates, yet a major campaign of alteration took place in the mid-nineteenth century. A new corridor was constructed to the outer entrance court, & the original hall of the 1660 block stripped of its panelling & turned into a drawing room ... the adjacent Great Closet was also stripped of its panelling, & extended into the well of the now removed secondary stair, & a new balustraded terrace built to the west. The service accommodation was considerably extended, & a billiard room was built onto the south of the oldest portion of the house, projecting out into the garden.
