Country House in Cambridgeshire
17th Century
JA 2012
- In 1660 the house was heavily extended for William, 5th Earl (later 1st Duke) of Bedford; a contract between the earl & the builder, John Lovin, still survives, which specifies the scale & accommodation of the building almost exactly as built, & the cost.
- The main work consisted of a doubling of the original house to contain a new kitchen (the contract even specifying the copying of the existing bay window), a 2-storey link, with an open arcade on the ground floor, & a new square, 3-storey hipped-roof pavilion (with richly-panelled interiors), to provide the main living accommodation.
